Why Should You Store Your Recipes?

Published by: anonym 2008-11-20
Do you have traditional family recipes? Family and cherished recipes are almost as important to cooking as having the freshest food. Consider the memories of that holiday goose your sister usually brings to the family dinner. Or, think about how important your Aunt Sally's cherry cobbler is that she shares with you every New Years Eve. Without a good recipe filing system, the recipes may get lost and forgotten. This is why it is important for us to catalog these recipes that we treasure.

In the text that follows, are several ideas to help you begin keeping your family recipes.

Below, you can find several ways to easily keep track of your recipes.

what would happen if all of a sudden the name of a vital ingredient slips through your mind? Or, say last year you cooked some quiche for a club's breakfast and you forget how to make the whole thing? For these reasons and more, it becomes important to make sure that you maintain notes on the things that you cook. While at the moment, you might not be concerned about it, keep in mind that recipes have specific instructions and are easy to forget. But, by keeping good notes, you will always have the information on hand, even if you do forget.

Or take for example, how it may become months or years since you may have cooked a recipe and you have forgotten all the ingredients? If you write and maintain detailed notes, you can prevent this ever happening to you. In case you do forget, the recipes will be safely kept in your notes ready to use anytime.

As you store recipes for many years, you may also want to add what substitutes can replace an ingredient. For example, if one recipe calls for sweetened evaporated milk, and there is none on the shelf, you might include how you can use a mixture of a tablespoon of sugar or honey as a substitute. Also, if the recipe asked for a particular name of a food manufacturer, a similar food, but with a different manufacturer may be able to be used instead, and can be noted on the recipe.

Index cards have been the traditional method of maintaining recipes and keeping in a file box. It is simple and convenient to jot down your recipe on an index card and then just slip into a box. But, you can easily keep track of your recipes in other ways just as easily. Binders can be very handy to hold recipes and that you can decorate to express your style of cooking. Notebooks are another great choice, and economical.
